    FAQ's

How do you ensure the security of my smart home devices?

Security of your smart home is of utmost importance to us. When designing systems, especially those connected to the internet, we put a variety of security protocols in place including firewalls, IP white lists, access monitoring and encrypted traffic.

If you have any specific security requirements we can work with you to lock your smart home down as much as you require.

Do I need an internet connection for my smart home to work?

Nope! this is the fantastic part of our systems, they can operate offline automations all run locally. This means that regardless of your internet speed or reliability, your home will always be quick and consistent in its behaviour.

Some features however do require the internet, such as remote access to your home or some services that use online cloud services. Generally though, we avoid this whenever possible.

What happens if something goes wrong with my smart home system?

For the first 3 months of your smart home there will potentially be teething problems and maybe automations aren’t completely dialled in. in this time will will make adjustments free of charge to meet the original spec.

Outside of this time we offer an ongoing maintenance fee to carry out updates and backups, we will ensure that features work after an update and fix them as apart of this package when they do fail, such as feature breaking changes in updates.

Outside of this we offer a call out service where we can come to your home to solve any problems, add or adjust automations and install additional hardware.

Do I need to buy my own hardware, or do you supply it?

That is totally up to you! if you wish to purchase your own hardware or bring in hardware you already own we can work with that. If you’d rather just hand off all of that to us, we will source all the hardware we recommend.
Not that that sometimes bringing your own hardware isn’t generally recommended as there isn’t a guarantee it will work well with other systems.

What is the process for designing a smart home with Highlands Smart Homes?

We start with a consolation, to get to know your requirements for your home. We discuss what is important to you, want features you want (don’t worry if you aren’t sure, we’ll help with a list of potential features). From the consolation we will generate a formal quote and fine tune from there.

Once the hardware has arrived a local electrician will be contracted to do the hardware install and the automations begins.

Automations and the smarts are then configured to your liking as you settle into your new smart home.

Can I control my smart home remotely?

    Yep!

It does come with a small monthly fee however and requires your home to be connected to the internet.

What devices can be automated in my home?

The amount of things that can be automated often catches people off guard, but generally all lights can be automated, appliance switches and anything with built in smarts.

It isn’t just limited to smart devices, in some instances “dumb” devices can be turned smart. There are many examples of this, but a common one is making a “dumb” washing machine and dryer smart with power monitoring plugs. By setting automations to check power consumption, your home can know when a dryer/washing load has started and finished.
